A warm welcome to the Cygnified Advent of Code 2nd edition! Last year was the worldwide premiere of the Cygnified Advent of Code. If you were there you know how good it was. If for some reason you weren’t, hopefully you will soon become aware.

I have had the opportunity to have a quick chat with Emil Breding about it.

“How are you doing Emil?“
Right now I am truly excited about this year’s Advent of Code that we are preparing. Nowadays, I don’t get the opportunity to code every day, but in the process of making this event a reality, it “requires” me to write a few lines of code, which makes me a little extra happy!

“Nice to hear! How did this event get started?“
A few colleagues at Cygni had been attending the ordinary Advent of Code for numerous of years and some thought it was time to take it to the next level and make something more out of Advent of Code.

Those who already participated had great fun, but thought it would be greater fun if more would join! Some thought the event might attract more people if there wasn’t such a focus about the submission time and that the code instead in addition was assessed from other aspects as well.

With that goal in mind and with the help from colleagues at our offices around Sweden the Cygnified Advent of Code was born. Last year we were 62 participants and hope for even more this year.

“Any specific reason why I should attend if I haven’t already?“
Our aim is to create an opportunity to focus on your skills development in a fun and creative environment together with great colleagues. Of course you should join!

The event takes place from the 1st to the 25th of December.

All uploaded code will be analysed using our super efficient state-of-the-art bash (hack?) on the following aspects:

  • lines of code
  • execution time (using advanced Docker knowledge)
  • submission time (stolen with pride from Advent of Code public API)
  • programming languages (analyzed using Linguist)

If we are lucky there will be a blog post in the near future that digs into the bits and pieces of how the backend works.

On top of the analysing engine, a frontend is built using Hugo. Hosted as a static site on GitHub. The site you are currently looking at.

How do I get started?

Follow the steps how to get started. Everyone who joins has the opportunity to get nice merch in the form of a t-shirt and stickers. If you would like to receive a t-shirt, we need your response before Wednesday, November 16th.

Join the discussions on Slack #adventofcode as well!

Best wishes and let’s start coding!
